Long, (not really) Awaited Update

Well, I realize it has been many a month since I have updated my blog.  Even though I take some time to add pictures from my phone here and there, my writing has waned.  I am going to try to make a commitment to post much more often.

I was thinking about doing a month-by-month update but that may take a while, so I'm just going to do a bulk update with pictures on many things that have occurred in the past few months.

Jackie Me and Megan with our 3D glasses on!
I'm not sure where to start because it's been so long, so I guess I'll start with Labor Day.  Some friends and I took a trip to Hermosa Beach to go to Universal Studios, spend some time on the beach and just get away from the Phoenix Heat.  We had a great time on the beach, enjoyed the King King vs. T-Rex and Jurassic Park Ride at Universal (even though they literally dump gallons of water on you at the end - see picture) Studios and had some great food as well!

After Labor Day, I went to a couple of concerts.  I went to the Ray Lamontagne concert.  Opening for Ray was Brandi Carlile and Vusi Mahlasela.  Craziest part of this concert is that I actually included Vusi Mahlasela in my Orals project at Whitman because he was one of the musical leaders of the anti-apartheid revolution in South Africa... crazy.

I also went to the Taylor Swift concert in mid-October with a bunch of people from work.  THere were a few crazy things about that concert: 1) We were the oldest people there who didn't have kids BY FAR, 2) Two nights of T-Swift concerts in Phoenix sold out in about 15 minutes (15K people at least at each show), 3) We literally had the FURTHEST seats away from T-Swift and the tickets were still over $100.  All that being said, it was probably one of the better concerts I had ever seen!  After the concert, Ours by Taylor Swift is my new favorite song (words and song is a bit off in this video but it's a great song)!

Megan, Me, Catherine, Josh and Jackie

Megan and Me after the run

Along with concerts, my friends and I did a fun mid-run (pictures included) and I got to do a bit of traveling already this fall.  As for the mud-run, if you've never done one or never heard of one, check them out, they're so much fun.  After about 1/4 of a mile we ran up this dirt hill and plunged into mud up to our armpits... so fun!!!  It was the perfect mix of social-atmosphere and fitness!

My first "trip" was to Vegas to hang out with Michelle for her birthday!  It was so wonderful to see her after nearly 2 years of not seeing her.  We also had a great time visiting some of Megan's family and relaxing by the pool!  A great mix of "on the strip" and "off the strip" Vegas.

On Top of Rockefeller Center

In Central Park
For work, I spent a week in Newark, NJ (which wasn't too exciting, but it was close to NY).  Then, after the work week I spend the weekend in New York with my friend Josh from work.  We did a lot of sight seeing which included doing the Rockefeller Center tour where we got to see the set of Saturday Night Live, the set of Brian William's new show Rock Center as well as all of the football sets that they use to report in the studio!  We took the metro a lot and also walked a TON.  We saw where the twin towers once stood and the new construction they are doing there.  We walked down to see Wall Street (and saw a ton of Occupy Wall Street protestors) and also walked to see the Statue of Liberty!  It was a great trip where I got to see many of the touristy things that I had never seen before!

Right after NY I took a trip to the other side of the country to visit Fam!!!  We had an amazing weekend seeing Mom and Dad's new house, going to the Sounders game, seeing Emily (a friend from college) and enjoying a REALLY relaxing weekend.  I was blown away by the Sounders game: 64,000 holding up their scarves, clapping at the same time, chanting the same chants... truly impressive!

Then came Halloween.  We carved some pumpkins, decorated and had a fun party.  There were 3 kermits at the party, a cowgirl, a flight attendant, a "Haboob" (someone dressed up as a dust storm), Elmo, Batman and Kristen Berndt (Yes, one of my friends stole my whitman soccer stuff, put a blonde wig on and came to the party dressed as me...).

Okay, now that you have an update on the last few months, here's a quick update on what's going on in the next little bit.
Today, my friends and I have put together a "Turkey Bowl" where we are planning on playing flag football at 1pm today.  After that, my soccer friend and I are going to the US Women's Soccer Game at University of Phoenix Stadium where they are playing Sweeden!  Should be a wonderful, and hopefully relaxing weekend.  Sunday will probably entail a lot of football watching and some University of Phoenix homework!

Have a wonderful fall weekend everyone.  Enjoy the cold weather because right now in Phoenix it's still about 70 degrees.

DC Trip Photos

Watch Any Session from the TFA 20th Anniversary Summit

I just got an email from TFA giving us a link to all the videos from EVERY session at the 20th Anniversary Summit. SOOO cool!!! I've already watched a few sessions that I didn't go to at the summit. One that I would REALLY suggest is the "Opening Plenary Session" with Geoffrey Canada (founder of Harlem's Children's Zone), the Superintendent of Los Angeles School District, Joel Klein (Former Chancellor of NYC Dept of Edu), Dave Levin (co-founder of KIPP schools) and Michelle Rhee (former chancellor of DC public schools). Another session that was PHENOMENAL was "The Tipping Point" with Malcolm Gladwell and Gloria Steinum... amazing.
Those are just a few of the super good videos on this site: TFA 20th ANNIVERSARY!
More videos (of the Opening and Closing sessions, as well as all the John Legend performances and Arne Duncan's speech can be found HERE.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy the videos and my pictures from DC are coming REALLY soon!

GOOD LUCK SISSY POO

So in case you didn't know - which I'm sure most of you did - Lauren starts her first day as a middle school teacher (sniff sniff). Good Luck Sis! You're going to do amazingly.

I must be completely honest, I would LOVE to be in Lauren's position right now, I Love Love Love 7th and 8th grade science and she is SOOOOOO lucky to get that job.

Anyhow, Lauren - good luck in your first day as a Viking!

(I hope I got the right picture - there were a couple Pacific Middle Schools :))

5 Great Wsys to Make Thursday Feel Like Friday

1. Take you lunch break as that, a break, and do something you enjoy- I just spent the last hour and a half doing yoga and now back to work (after showering of course)

2. Do something nice for someone. I can't write what I did cause that would give away the surprise but its going to be great!

3. Go outside. While I realize this may not work in the Washington area right now unless you want a little snow - but in Az its a sunny 70 and beautiful.

4. Play a game! While my game is soccer tonight- yours could be 4 way solitaire or racko :)

5. Remind yourself in 27 hours that you're going to be at the weekend!

Happy Thursday!

The Trip That Never Ends

While I'm sitting at the Reagan National Airport (which apparently I should call National, because apparently people here don't like the fact that it's named after Reagan, but I digress) I thought I would write a post before I put all my pictures up - since I thought we were going to be delayed - but I just heard that we will be boarding in a few minutes - so this might not be as elaborate as I was planning.

Real Quick Recap:

- Thursday: Flew to DC, got in at 7, went to dinner, went to drinks at this fun "game" bar which had skee ball, shuffle board, air hockey, pool, etc., went to bed.

- Friday: Walked around Chinatown in the morning, had a TFA Staff lunch (SUPER SUPER SUPER Inspiring - the woman in charge of opening TFA Seattle-Tacoma spoke and was so passionate about her/TFA's work up there), became a tourist and went to the Natural History Museum (I don't think I would have liked this as much if I hadn't had become a science nerd the last two years - get ready Lauren)

- Saturday: Had the most inspiring sessions ever at the TFA 2oth Anniversary Summit, saw Malcolm Gladwell and Gloria Steinum in a session about the "tipping point" to movements or revolutions, went to a session on "getting things done in politically complicated environments" (Seattle Anyone???), and then we had a closing session - during that closing session, we had an awesome message from President Obama and an impromptu concert from John Legend (both videos I will upload when I get home), that night - went to a reception and met (and got a picture with) Wendy Kopp.

- Sunday: I went to another workshop about "Bringing the "JOY FACTOR" into your classroom" which was AMAZING, then we went to the Newseum which was absolutely incredible, and then met some TFA peeps for dinner.

- Monday: Another Tourist Day filled with the national air and space museum and the American History Museum (both incredible) and a night topped off with dinner with a friend from Whitman, Maggie Carr.

- Tuesday: Went to see Afram Jewelry and talked to Sam for quite a while (so cool), went to see the White House and then went to the Portrait Gallery.

Okay, got to run - plane is boarding!!!
Pics and Videos to come!

Good News on the Home Front

Well- I planned on doing 5 reasons why to not get your tonsils taken out, I decided to take a little more of a positive spin.
Well its 1 week in and huge news... I can eat Easy Mac... Wow, I know, amazing! The pain is going down (except when I have to take my medicine- that burns a LOT). With the reduction of pain comes more food- I'm now eating oatmeal, soup, mac and cheese, and potatoes!!! Wahoo I know.

Thanks for everyone's warm wishes and the few cards I've gotten! :)

Recapping December - Moving to the New Year

Well, the New Year has begun and I have already faltered on my resolutions - I forgot to workout a few days. That being said, I wanted to do a quick photo recap of my December and put a link to the Picasa Album for the pictures explained below for all 6 of you who read my blog! This blog will also entail a bit of a January Update (all 3 days of it) and my plans for the upcoming 2011 year! Enjoy.
Click below to see the pics explained!

Winter 2010-2011

December started with beautiful weather as evidenced here with my hike with my friend Jackie.

After that, my friends and I decided that we wanted a little cold weather so we headed North to Flagstaff, Az. We have been to Flag for the last 2 years, so we couldn't have a winter without our annual trip. Our annual trip always includes Altitudes (pictured here) and train shots (a $1 shot every time the train goes by - which, I'm pretty sure the waitress lied a couple of times to get us to buy more :) ).

After Altitudes bar, we, again, always go to this pub that I can't remember the name of right now. Here we are there:

My time in Phoenix concluded with lots of Christmas cheer for the 3rd Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party. Here are some pics from that fiasco of a party!

After that festive occasion, I headed north for the holidays! A few days into being home, Mom, Dad, Lauren and I went skiing and snowboarding. We had an absolute blast at Summit Central getting our snow legs back under us.

And for the best picture of the year:

After skiing/snowboarding, we went to go get our 27th Annual (24th for me) picture with Santa... except... Santa forgot to come. He was busy delivering presents around the world, so Lauren and I just sat in his chair.

Christmas occurred the next day. To see pictures of this joyous day, please check out Lauren's Pictures.

Following Christmas and the wonderful few days of having family over, we decided to hit the slopes again, this time at Crystal Mountain. My oh my does Snoqualmie seem small after going to Crystal. After a few hours of skiing (boarding for me) we stopped for some grub and beer and hit the slopes again. Here is a pic during our stopped time:

Because we couldn't get enough snow, we went back to the mountains the next day (or maybe a couple days after - I seem to have lost track). Here I am in the snow.

We had a great time going up to the pass, driving around in the snow, and going to a sweet bar (everyone should check out the Brick at some point in their lives). The only bad part of this trip was the 5 hour drive back because of accidents on the pass... booooo.

My stint in Washington ended with some awesome friend time. Here was our quick Ballroom girls reunion in Seattle! Oh how I miss these girls... but it was amazing seeing them.

Then, New Years was here as Susy came in from Phoenix to celebrate!!! We traveled around North Bend and Snoqualmie, reliving the roots :) Then, the night ended with a great dinner at an awesome pizza place with Susy, Lauren, Bryan, Kate, Luke, and Andrea... so yummy, and then a trip to Salty's on Alkai beach (sans Lauren and Bryan). Drinks and an amazing view was had by all!

Now, here I am back in Phoenix, and going back to work tomorrow. ACK.

5 Thing to Look Forward To (or not) in January:
1) SEAHAWKS MADE THE PLAYOFFS - can't wait to watch the game on Saturday
2) Going to a Coyote's game this Saturday after watching the Seahawks
3) Go Oregon - going to Glendale to watch the BCS Championship Game
4) Apparently I am running a half marathon... oops, somehow training slipped my mind...
5) Mom and Dad are coming down (for the Tonsil removal - this is the not fun part of January)
